BASICS doctors raise their own funds to buy equipment, and work for free in their spare time. Sadly there are still areas of the county a long way from the nearest BASICS doctor and there are times of the week when no doctor is available, as they are unable to leave their NHS patients in hospitals and GP surgeries to attend the emergency.
You can help in three ways:
-
We believe that the service we provide should not rely on volunteers but be provided by the NHS to all patients who require it. You could write to your MP or the chief executive of the Strategic Health Authority stating:
-
You are aware that some severely injured patients require care before they get to hospital that can only be given by doctors
-
Currently in Hampshire the Ambulance service is relying on volunteers to deliver this care
-
Because these volunteers can only respond when they are not on duty in their full time jobs, many calls for a BASICS doctor go unanswered
-
This means adults and children may die for want of a doctor, and the NHS should be providing that doctor whenever one is needed.
