Medical Support for Emergency Services
BASICS Hampshire provide medical support for all Hampshire’s emergency services, not just the ambulance service.
We do our best to provide emergency medical response to a huge range of demands. We currently do it as volunteers, with the limited time available, but would love to be able to provide a full-time service.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR). Five of our members are associated with the USAR team and train with them. We do this so that we can confidently provide high-level medical assistance in confined spaces (eg, collapsed buildings) or using rope-access. We use our annual leave to keep our skills to the required level.

Police Fire Arms Unit. We provide medical cover for police units. That means being there at short notice to provide immediate care to officers or anyone injured in police engagements.
Often the police have to go in without our back up because there’s no one from BASICS Hampshire free.

Coastguard at Lee-on-Solent. When they require a doctor for an offshore patient, the coastguard currently contacts the ambulance service who contact us. (http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/spare/Doctor-to-aid-of-heart.2703522.jp)

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. This has been flying since July 2007. BASICS Doctors staff this as often as they can. Some have been able to trade time with their hospitals to cover shifts, others fly entirely in their own time. It requires even more spare time to qualify to fly with the air ambulance, including learning how to survive ditching in the sea! (click here for image)

Major incidents. If anything major goes down in Hampshire, BASICS Hampshire doctors are the first port of call. Because of their specialist training (EVENTUAL LINK), expertise and experience, they are the best people to respond when such tragedies occur. They are used to operating in extreme conditions outside the hospital environment and train to meet and manage exceptional scenes. Some of these have been outside the county.
